ABOUT SHRI

Shri is the proud father of two adult children, a grandfather, husband, “fur dad” and son who was born in Belgaum, Karnataka (originally known as the State of Mysore), India on February 22, 1955. Shri is also a scientist, author, former gubernatorial candidate,  retired businessman, and a current resident of Palmer Woods in northwest Detroit.

At the age of 24, after achieving an undergraduate degree in inorganic chemistry at Bombay University, Shri came to America in 1979 with nothing, but a blue suitcase in hand and $20 in his pocket. Shri answered a calling to become a better person and one day work for social justice in America, the seeds of which were sown after experiencing family struggles with severe poverty and injustice in his native land and as a youth, witnessing the remarkable relationship between Dr. Martin Luther King and Mohandas K. Gandhi who was a source of inspiration for Dr. King in pushing forward the Civil Rights Movement in America.

Less than a decade after landing in Ohio, Shri became a citizen of the United States in 1988. He developed his own personal formula for success and achieved a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Akron. Shri was also post-doctoral research scholar at the University of Michigan. All of this was in preparation for a special calling to serve, but Shri has to first discover and decide a way to serve using his skills and can do attitude.

In August 2018, Shri made a historic run in the Democratic Primary as the first Indian-American in Michigan to pursue the office of governor in his home state.  Shri won 199, 574 votes across Michigan or 17.7 percent of the votes in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, but even more significantly, Shi’s story as a tough fighter for the People connected with Detroit voters who cast ballots for him 37,000 times—5,000 of which were right inside Michigan’s third state House District that rests entirely in the city of Detroit and now features an open seat for the office of State Representative in 2020.

Shri has been on the front lines with the Fight for $15 Movement because Shri worked minimum wage jobs through school to make ends meet and he knows how important it is for families to have opportunities to earn a living wage in Michigan and not have to work two and three jobs in the process.

When families get to know Shi, they recognize that has the smarts, and the toolkit and the endurance to work tirelessly for real change in Michigan by setting policy that works for the people and taking action.

Shri has overcome major obstacles. Shri listens. Shri understands and he will make sure people are taken care of, no matter how big the issues are because Shri’s up for the challenge.

This is what has always set Shri apart from his competitors…He knows how to fight, he has real solutions for Michigan and Shri knows how to take action.
