BIOGRAPHY

State Representative Dr. Shri Thanedar is serving his first term in the Michigan House of Representatives. Shri is an immigrant, Ph.D. scientist, entrepreneur, husband, father, and grandfather who grew up in a working class family that suffered financial hardship. In 1979, Shri immigrated to the United States to search for better opportunities. He paid for his education by working as a teacher’s assistant. In those days, Shri earned just $300 a month, of which he sent $75 each month to his home in India, so his mother could put food on the table for the family struggling through difficult times. After earning his Ph.D, Shri worked as a post-doctoral research scholar at the University of Michigan from 1982-1984. A community advocate for progressive solutions to achieve social, racial and economic justice, he now represents the 3rd District of Detroit. For over 25 years, Shri has built small businesses, creating and supporting thousands of well-paying jobs that helped families. In 2016, Shri sold his business and gave away $1,500,000 bonuses to his employees to thank them for their hard work.

After his retirement from the world of business, Shri answered a calling to fight for social, racial and economic justice, a fight which was personal after experiencing struggles with severe poverty and injustice in his native India as a child. Shri found guidance and inspiration in the remarkable relationship between Dr. Martin Luther King and Mohandas K. Gandhi, the revolutionary Indian leader who inspired Dr. King’s nonviolent civil justice revolution in America. Although Shri was unsuccessful in his 2018 bid for the democratic nomination for the Governor of Michigan, he got over 200,000 votes and won the city of Detroit. Shri has been on the front lines with the Fight for $15 Movement because Shri worked minimum wage jobs through school to make ends meet. Shri knows how important it is for families to have opportunities to earn a living wage in Michigan, instead of stretching themselves between two or three jobs to make ends meet.  When families get to know Shri, they recognize that he has the knowledge, the passion to help people and the endurance to work tirelessly for real change in Michigan by drafting, introducing, and passing policy that works for the people to improve quality of life for all.
